Ask ChatGPT to introduce itself and within seconds it will tell you it is a ‘language model trained by OpenAI… designed to assist users in generating human-like text.’ Essentially, it’s the Siri or Google Assistant you’ve already got on your phone and a whole lot more. Reaching a million users in the staggeringly short period of just five days, the potentially world-changing chatbot’s ability to carry out tasks like fixing broken code or writing screenplays, has got its name on seemingly everybody’s lips.

Interestingly, Japan was by far the loudest player in the conversation, but we kept our study on home soil, tuning our social listening into mentions of ChatGPT in the UK (the fourth biggest global audience). We then broke down the data into distinct tribes, finding voices in the noise (Fig. 1).

Insights:

  • ChatGPT has, unsurprisingly, reached all corners of the Tech community:
Such a huge advance in the Technology world can only be expected to command a similarly proportioned response, but we can see that engagement with the chatbot is spread across an array of Tech-focussed tribes. Amongst them are Developers, Coders, Entrepreneurs, Strategists, Cybersecurity Experts and Crypto Gurus.

  • Not just Tech news:
The waves made by ChatGPT crashed over Tech’s borders, also garnering huge interest from Business Leaders, Directors, Creatives, and Marketers across a number of industries.

  • Gen Z cares:
It’s almost a given that Gen Z are tech-savvy, but when it comes to this study, the generalisation holds fast. Each and every one of the non-Business/Tech audiences coalesced around youth culture, with Gaming, Hip-Hop, and Dance Music all forming their own tribes.

  • Learners and Educators:
Finally, a compelling grouping of tribes opened up in 4th place on our list of top themes - that of Education & Learning. Made up of Teachers, Educators, and Higher Education Students, this group indicates that those with a vested interest in knowledge are already looking into its practical implementation.

At Fifty, we live and breathe audience understanding. We know all about what it can do for brands, but just so we’re clear, here’s what ChatGPT had to say about it:
